Why will I love it?
Rhipsalis paradoxa has thin, spineless green stems that grow in a cascading pattern, creating a mesmerising chain-like effect. It grows epiphytically (on other trees or plants) in the rainforests of Brazil, where it can grow up to 50 metres long.
Light or shade?
Can tolerate bright indirect light to partial shade.
Where should I put it?
This plant prefers warmer temperatures, so is perfect for a warm, humid bathroom or kitchen. Hang at least 45cm away from a bright window to avoid direct sunlight, as this can scorch its stems.
How do I keep it alive?
Water in spring and summer, allowing the compost to dry out between waterings, and reduce watering from mid-autumn to early spring when the plant is dormant. Use free-draining soil and consider adding perlite or sand to improve drainage. Feed only in spring and summer and avoid temperatures below 10C.
Did you know …
Rhipsalis is named from the Greek word rhips, which means “wickerwork” and refers to the slender, flexible, reed-like stems. This genus was first described by German botanist Joseph Gaertner in 1788.
