Households urged to cash in £130million of unused energy vouchers before deadline

Households on prepayment meters are being urged to make sure they have cashed in all their energy vouchers before the end of June.

The Government says around £130million worth of vouchers is still available to help with energy bills - but there isn't long left to use them.

These energy vouchers expire on June 30, 2023 - so you only have four weeks left to claim them.

The help is through the Government's Energy Bill Support Scheme which gave every household in the country £400 off their energy bills from October 2022 to march 2023.

Those on direct debits and smart prepayment meters received the payments automatically.

However, those on prepayment meters were sent vouchers by post or email and have had to take them to a post office or PayPoint vendor in order for the discount to be credited to their meter.

The Government said that 83% of those vouchers, or around four in five, have already been claimed.

This totals around £650million in energy support.

According to the latest figures, published earlier this month, for the sixth month in a row London had the lowest take up rate with more than 650,000 vouchers still unused at the end of March.

Around 25% of vouchers in both Scotland and the South East of England are also yet to be claimed.

This is why the Government has created the campaign of "Claim Your Energy Voucher Day" - which hopes to remind more eligible energy customers to claim the help.

Amanda Solloway, minister for energy consumers and affordability said: “We’ve made huge strides in getting nearly £650 million from our Energy Bills Support Scheme out to prepayment meter customers, often in the homes that need it most.

“Today we are redoubling our efforts to reach anyone who still hasn’t claimed this help, and it’s fantastic to see so many join our final push to spread the word.

“Tell friends and family or anyone on a traditional prepayment meter to use their vouchers for up to £400 off bills before 30 June – there is still £130 million out there to claim.”

How to claim the energy support voucher

Many of the energy support vouchers were sent by suppliers to those eligible by email, text or post.

They then needed to be taken to a local PayPoint store or a Post Office to be credited onto prepayment meters.

The vouchers must be redeemed within 90 days of their issue date - if your voucher has expired, then you will need to contact your energy provider to get a new one issued.

If you have not received your energy voucher, then you should contact your supplier directly over the phone, by email or in a letter.

You can find out the best ways to contact your supplier on their website.

If you are struggling to use the voucher, the Government says you should contact your electricity supplier immediately for help.

You have until Friday June 30 to redeem the vouchers - after this date they will not work.
