Households in Ireland to get €200 boost in weeks as cost of living and cold snap bites

All households in Ireland are set to benefit from a boost of almost €200 from the Government in the next few weeks amid the rising cost of living.

The payment is the second of its kind and was announced in Budget 2023 in a bid to support households during the “exceptional rise in energy prices,” according to the government.

A boost of €183.49, excluding VAT, will be credited to all domestic electricity accounts in the coming weeks.

It comes as part of the Electricity Costs Emergency Benefit Scheme II and will automatically be applied to all households in the Republic of Ireland. This means that there is no need to apply or ask an electricity supplier to accept it.

The first payment of €183.49 was paid from November 1 onwards as part of the final billing cycle of the year. The second will be credited to accounts from January 1 to February 28 for the first billing cycle of 2023. The next will cover the March/April cycle.

The date that each household receives the credit will depend on when the supplier sends out the bill. Suppliers will have information on their websites with the exact dates the credit will show on customers’ bills, RSVP reports.

The scheme is being operated by the Distribution System Operator (ESB Networks) and payments will be made by them to energy suppliers, who will, in turn, credit domestic electricity accounts.

The Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU) is overseeing the Electricity Costs Emergency Benefit Scheme II.

If households are still waiting on their first instalment, they should contact their electricity supplier if they do not receive it by January 31, 2023. For the second payment, they should seek help if they have not received it by March 31 and by May 31 for the third.
