Household Support Fund extended AGAIN with another £500million available - how to apply

Millions more people will be able to access help through the Household Support Fund after Rishi Sunak confirmed the scheme will be boosted by another £500million.

Some of the help that is offered through the Household Support Fund includes money towards your bills and supermarket vouchers.

However, the support does vary between councils - as well as the eligibility criteria.

This means each local authority decides who to give the money to, and how the money should be spent - so you may face a postcode lottery in terms of the help available to you.

The Chancellor confirmed the extension of the Household Support Fund as part of a wider £15billion package to tackle the cost of living crisis.

The fund was originally worth £500million when it was first announced in October 2021 and had already been doubled to £1billion.

Speaking in the House of Commons today, Mr Sunak said: "There may be some people who fall between the cracks.

"So to support them, we will extend the Household Support Fund by half a billion pounds."

How to apply for the Household Support Fund

To access the Household Support Fund, you need to contact your local authority directly.

They will give you information about who is eligible, what support they can give, and what information they require from you.

Most of the time, you will need to be on a low income or claim certain benefits to receive any help.

To give you an idea of what you could claim, residents in Barnsley were previously offered £200 in vouchers to spend at supermarkets and shops including Aldi, Asda, Argos and Currys.

North Yorkshire residents were able to claim a £125 voucher to help pay for food and other essentials.

Each council is allocated a set amount of money through the Household Support Fund - this means you should apply sooner rather than later, before it runs out of cash.

Other help announced today by the Chancellor includes a £400 discount on energy bills for every UK home, and a £650 one-off payment for people who claim benefits.

In the autumn, pensioner households will get £300 one-off payment and disabled people will get a £150 payment.

The help could be vital for some families, after the boss of Ofgem warned energy bills are expected to be hiked by another £800 later this year.

The price cap for those on default tariffs paying by direct debit increased by £693 from £1,277 to £1,971 last month.

Jonathan Brearley, the chief executive of Ofgem, said this could reach "in the region of £2.800" by October.
