Household staple kills moss 'by magic' on paving with 'no scrubbing' for just £2.30

As we (very prematurely, but hopefully) think about the end of winter, and the start of spring, we may start considering what we want to do with our gardens when the sun finally puts its hat on. One of our considerations may be to get rid of moss in the garden, which some people may find unsightly.

Moss are non-flowering plants that produce spores and they have stems and leaves but don't have true roots. Moss can appear all over the home and garden, including on paving and tarmac, and once it's taken hold, it can be really tough to get rid of.

Moss can be removed in a variety of ways, but some are easier than others (Stock Image) (Shared Content Unit)

Moss is commonly associated with poor soil fertility, low soil pH, and excessive moisture, and it can be a slip hazard when it grows on pathways - but thankfully, Mrs Hinch fans have come up with genius hacks to get rid of it on a budget.

Posting on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, someone asked: "What is the best way to remove moss from paving slabs and tarmac?"

Of course, it can be picked out by hand or dug up, but this can be very time-consuming and irritating, and blasting it with a pressure washer may not be an option for everybody.

On the group, one suggested: "Cheap washing powder - just shake it over the area. I was given this tip last year and it even worked on thick moss.

"No scrubbing required, just leave it on until the rain washes it away. Would probably need a couple of dry days and the moss eventually shrivels up and dies."

Others suggested the same method, recommending allowing a few hours to make it work, with one suggesting using a supermarket's own-brand, writing: "I buy Asda own washing powder for jobs like this, even works on weeds too. Sprinkle it over and watch the magic happen."

Asda's Just Essentials Washing Powder is just £2.30 and will last 45 washes, or 45 applications on moss and weeds to keep them at bay.

Ben Hilton, gardening expert at The Yard and Garden told the Express that washing powder is most effective when used sparingly and only on the moss itself.
