Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is taking action in response to the lack of measures addressing the U.S. migrant crisis by proposing a border security bill alongside foreign aid legislation. This move comes after facing potential rebellion from fellow Republicans over the issue.
Johnson announced that the House Rules Committee will soon release the text of three bills aimed at funding America's national security interests and supporting allies in Israel, the Indo-Pacific, and Ukraine. These bills include a loan structure for aid, enhanced strategy, and accountability.
Additionally, a fourth bill will encompass various national security priorities, such as a potential TikTok ban and the bipartisan REPO Act, which aims to liquidate seized Russian assets to benefit Ukraine. The bill also includes provisions for imposing sanctions and other measures against Russia, China, and Iran.
Furthermore, Johnson revealed that a separate border security bill will be introduced, incorporating key elements of H.R.2, a comprehensive border security bill passed by House Republicans last year. H.R.2 features initiatives like the 'Remain In Mexico' policy from the Trump administration and expanded expulsion authorities for law enforcement at the U.S.-Mexico border, although it has been criticized by Democrats.
While the border security bill will progress through the House Rules Committee independently, all five pieces of legislation are slated for a vote on Saturday evening. Lawmakers will have the opportunity to propose amendments to each of the bills, allowing for further discussion and potential modifications.
