House Speaker Mike Johnson has indicated to Republicans that he sees challenges ahead for the debt limit in President Donald Trump's initial legislative package, as reported by three sources familiar with the matter.
During a meeting in Doral, Florida, Johnson highlighted that there are members of the Republican party in both the House and Senate who have never supported a debt limit increase. Given the complex dynamics in Congress, he suggested that Republicans might need to collaborate with Democrats on this issue rather than incorporating it into Trump's significant legislative agenda.
While some conservative Republicans expressed reservations about working with Democrats, no alternative plan was proposed during the discussion.
Johnson's remarks were made as part of efforts by him and his leadership team to prepare the House GOP for the upcoming release of a crucial budget resolution. This budget resolution will contain directives that will determine whether the debt limit can be included or not.
