House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed confidence in his bid for the gavel, anticipating a successful outcome on the first round of voting with just one expected 'no' vote. During an appearance on Kudlow, Johnson conveyed his optimism, stating, 'I think it’s going to be okay. We’ll have maybe one no vote. I think we get it done on the first round. Certainly, hopeful for that.'
The lone dissenting vote is currently GOP Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, with Johnson unable to afford losing more than one member of his party's support. Emphasizing the importance of promptly selecting a speaker, Johnson characterized a speaker-less Congress as 'a constitutional crisis.'
'We could be the most consequential Congress of the modern era… we don’t have any time to waste and I think everyone recognizes that here,' Johnson remarked, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Johnson dedicated his afternoon to meeting with several undecided members in his office. Following the discussions, members reported that the speaker was attentive to their concerns, indicating a willingness to address any issues raised.
