House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed optimism about winning the election on the first ballot, despite facing uncertainty due to uncommitted GOP lawmakers. The House lawmakers are set to vote today on re-electing Johnson as their majority leader. Johnson's supporters are confident in his ability to secure the speakership, but they are also prepared for the possibility of multiple rounds of voting, potentially leading to a prolonged floor battle.
In order to secure the speakership, Johnson can only afford to lose one GOP vote if every lawmaker participates in the voting process. Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky has already declared that he will not support Johnson, while approximately a dozen more House Republicans have yet to pledge their support.
