House Speaker Denies Cutting Deals During Speaker Vote

U.S. House of Representatives meet to vote on new Speaker of the House at the U.S. Capitol in Washington

House Speaker Mike Johnson has refuted claims that he made deals with Reps. Ralph Norman and Keith Self to secure votes during today's speaker election. Johnson emphasized that no deals were made, and he solely considered suggestions and requests from all members regarding process reforms and changes, which he was already committed to implementing.

Johnson asserted, 'We made no deals with anyone, no quid pro quo to anybody on any position, or anything at all. Transparency is crucial, and every member should be on a level playing field, which we maintained today. I'm proud of that.' He also mentioned plans to decentralize the speaker's office and power, introducing a new paradigm.
