Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed that House Republicans will be meeting with President-elect Donald Trump this week and over the weekend to address the division within the GOP regarding the passage of Trump's legislative agenda.
Johnson stated that discussions with Trump have already taken place and more are scheduled for this week. Trump is expected to visit Washington, DC, for former President Jimmy Carter's funeral, during which the meetings will likely occur.
Additionally, Trump plans to host House Republicans at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend for three days of discussions on the upcoming challenges and how to work together to achieve their goals.
Johnson mentioned a meeting scheduled with Senate Majority Leader John Thune to align the House GOP's strategy with that of the Senate.
While House Republicans are in favor of combining Trump's tax, border, and energy agenda into a single bill for Senate approval, Thune has suggested splitting the priorities into two separate bills. Johnson expressed confidence in uniting both chambers on a cohesive strategy.
Despite differing opinions, Johnson noted that Trump prefers a comprehensive bill encompassing all priorities, emphasizing the potential benefits of such an approach.
