House Republicans have re-issued subpoenas related to special counsel Robert Hur's investigation into President Joe Biden's handling of classified documents. The subpoenas, which were renewed on Monday, are part of ongoing pursuits by the previous Congress that have been tied up in court battles for months.
The renewed subpoenas are expected to be received by the Justice Department under the Trump administration, which is anticipated to be more cooperative with congressional Republicans seeking documents and information.
One of the subpoenas pertains to audio recordings of interviews between President Biden and his ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer, where they discussed classified information for Biden's memoir during his time as Vice President. Various parties, including the Heritage Foundation and media outlets, have been pushing for the release of these recordings obtained by Hur, despite the DOJ's arguments against making them public.
Additionally, subpoenas have been re-issued to DOJ tax investigators Mark Daly and Jack Morgan, following prior attempts by the House Judiciary Committee. The investigators have not provided testimony, leading to a lawsuit against the DOJ for preventing their depositions regarding the Biden investigation. The court case is currently on hold and under the jurisdiction of Judge Ana Reyes in the DC District Court.
As House Republicans gear up for their new majority, they have indicated potential investigations targeting special counsels Jack Smith and David Weiss over their handling of criminal cases involving Trump and Hunter Biden, respectively.
