House Republicans are currently engaged in negotiations to secure additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security in the continuing resolution. The aim is to provide President-elect Donald Trump with the necessary resources to carry out his proposed mass deportation plan.
According to GOP Rep. Mark Amodai, who heads the House Appropriations subcommittee overseeing DHS, the exact funding amount is still under discussion. Amodai described the ongoing negotiations as a challenging process, likening it to a game of 'whack a mole.'
It has been noted that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has historically faced funding shortages. To execute large-scale detentions and deportations of undocumented immigrants, a significant increase in funding would be required, as highlighted by current and former Homeland Security officials.
Although the specifics of Trump's mass deportation strategy have not been clearly outlined by his aides, Republicans familiar with ICE data estimate that there are approximately 1.4 million individuals with pending deportation orders. The removal of such a substantial number of individuals would necessitate a considerable financial investment.
