Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., took to social media to express his disapproval of the efforts by extreme MAGA Republicans to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Jeffries labeled the move as a 'phony political stunt' and urged the proponents to 'get lost.'
The U.S. Senate is set to receive the House-passed articles of impeachment against Mayorkas next month. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., informed Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., that the impeachment articles would be formally sent over on April 10, urging for an expeditious trial.
In February, the House Republicans voted to impeach Mayorkas over his handling of the U.S. southern border, marking the first impeachment of a cabinet secretary since 1876. Schumer's office confirmed that the Senate would commence the impeachment trial upon receiving the articles, with senators to be sworn in as jurors the following day, presided over by Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray.
The trial is deemed unlikely to result in a conviction, given the political landscape and the nature of the accusations against Mayorkas.
