House Republicans are pushing for stronger protections for whistleblowers who speak out against the Department of Justice (DOJ). A new bill led by a Republican representative from New York and backed by House Judiciary Chairman from Ohio aims to ensure a fair and prompt process for DOJ whistleblowers.
The bill, named the Protect Whistleblowers from Retaliation Act, seeks to address concerns about the treatment of whistleblowers within the FBI and DOJ. It aims to prevent retaliation tactics such as pulling security clearances, delaying investigations, and ending careers of those who come forward with allegations.
According to House Judiciary Chairman, dozens of DOJ whistleblowers have approached the committee with claims of political bias and misconduct. The proposed bill would designate the DOJ Inspector General's office as the sole investigator for whistleblower retaliation cases and require investigations to be completed within 240 days.
In addition, the bill would prohibit the DOJ from taking actions that involve revoking security clearances as a form of retaliation. This move comes in response to concerns that existing whistleblower protection laws have not been sufficient in preventing retaliation against those who speak out.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco recently announced a 90-day pilot program to encourage whistleblowers to come forward with new information. The House Judiciary Committee has been actively investigating allegations of whistleblower retaliation within the FBI since Republicans gained the majority in January 2023.
The committee's select subcommittee on the weaponization of the federal government held a hearing last year to address claims of whistleblower retaliation within the bureau. The DOJ has been approached for comment on the accusations made by the House Republicans but has not responded at this time.
