A trio of House Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee have outlined new demands for Attorney General Merrick Garland ahead of their committee’s upcoming hearing. The lawmakers, including Reps. Chip Roy, Andy Biggs, and Thomas Massie, are set to question Garland on various topics, as revealed in a recent letter.
The trio is specifically accusing the Department of Justice (DOJ) of imposing excessive sentences on individuals who were present at the Capitol on January 6. They have requested a range of information and are seeking a briefing on this issue.
Amid mounting pressure from the GOP to hold Garland in contempt of Congress following former President Donald Trump’s conviction, these lawmakers are also aiming to revisit the events of the January 6 insurrection.
The Republicans have raised concerns about the treatment of defendants in federal custody, alleging potential retaliation by detention officers, substandard living conditions in holding cells, poor food quality, and the imposition of degrading punishments.
Having previously submitted multiple inquiries to the DOJ on this matter, the lawmakers are now calling for a briefing to be held by June 17 to address these issues.
