House Republicans confident in passing second vote to impeach Mayorkas

House Republicans speak to reporters in Washington

House Republicans are gearing up for a second vote to impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Last week, they fell just two votes short of securing the impeachment, but are optimistic about their chances this time around.

The House GOP can only afford to lose two votes, but last week, four Republicans defied their party and voted against the impeachment. However, a last-minute switch allowed the losing side to have another opportunity. This dynamic has created a sense of uncertainty in the outcome of the upcoming vote.

Congressman Byron Donalds, who voted in favor of impeachment, expressed his confidence in the GOP's ability to pass the motion this week. He attributed his optimism to the imminent return of Leader Scalise, who has been recovering from cancer and is expected to join the vote. Congressman Donalds firmly believes that Mayorkas should be removed from his position due to his alleged dishonesty and failure to secure the southern border.

Donalds highlighted the escalating crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, pointing out that over a million encounters have already taken place this fiscal year. These numbers indicate that the situation is getting worse and demand urgent action. According to the congressman, Mayorkas has not faithfully executed the law and has even perjured himself by lying to Congress.

As the political climate intensifies in an election year, attention is turning toward the Speaker of the House's ability to secure the votes needed for the impeachment. Congressman Donalds expressed confidence in Speaker Pelosi's capability to get the job done, particularly with the support of Leader Scalise. However, he emphasized that time is running out, as the next major hurdle for Congress is government funding, and the issue of border security will undoubtedly play a crucial role in those deliberations.

Donalds made it clear that if the Biden administration wants funding for the government, they must first address the border security issue. The congressman believes that securing the nation is the primary duty of the U.S. government, and if it fails in this regard, funding should not be granted. This sentiment is shared by many members of Congress who believe that funding should be contingent upon the successful securing of the border.

As the second vote on Mayorkas' impeachment approaches, House Republicans are confident that with the return of Leader Scalise, they will have the necessary numbers. The outcome of the vote will then shift the focus to the Senate, where the question of whether Mayorkas should keep his job will be decided. The stakes are high, and both sides are eager to make their case as this critical issue unfolds.
