Amid growing concerns about President Biden's fitness for office, some House Republicans are privately worried that replacing him on the Democratic ticket could jeopardize the GOP's chances of winning the White House in November.

One House Republican, speaking anonymously, expressed mixed feelings about the prospect of Biden not running for re-election, acknowledging that while it might be beneficial for Biden personally, it could pose challenges for the Democratic Party and potentially alter the dynamics of the upcoming election.

The lawmaker highlighted the perceived advantage Trump had over Biden in the previous election and suggested that a younger and more popular replacement for Biden could make the race more competitive and unpredictable.

Some Republicans see advantage in Trump over Biden and fear a competitive race with a new Democratic nominee.

Speculation has arisen within the GOP about potential Democratic candidates like California Gov. Gavin Newsom or figures from New York who could energize Democratic voter turnout, potentially endangering Republican-held swing seats in down-ballot races.

Biden's lackluster performance in a recent CNN Presidential Debate, where he appeared hoarse and stumbled over his answers, has fueled doubts about his ability to lead effectively. Even some of his allies in Congress have acknowledged his poor showing and raised concerns about the implications for down-ballot races.

While Republicans have long criticized Biden's fitness for office, the possibility of a different Democratic nominee has created uncertainty for the GOP, with some lawmakers viewing both scenarios as risky.

A senior House GOP aide bluntly stated that Biden running gives Republicans the best chance at victory, emphasizing the perceived weaknesses of any potential replacement for Biden.

However, not all House Republicans share the same level of concern, with Rep. Tim Burchett arguing that voters will focus on Biden's policies, which Republicans believe have been detrimental to the country. Burchett suggested that a new candidate would essentially be a polished version of Biden, likely supporting similar policies.

In response to House GOP concerns, a Trump campaign spokesman praised Trump's debate performance and criticized Democrats for ignoring Biden's alleged cognitive and physical decline. A recent poll revealed that a significant portion of Democratic voters doubt Biden's cognitive health.

Despite the fallout from the debate, Biden has shown no intention of stepping aside, and top Democratic allies have publicly supported his decision to continue his presidential campaign.
