As lawmakers gather in the chamber ahead of the speaker's vote, there have been notable developments among House Republicans regarding their support for Mike Johnson. Two GOP representatives, Eli Crane and Greg Steube, have now expressed their backing for Johnson, signaling a potential shift in support.
Crane cited President-elect Donald Trump's endorsement of Johnson as a key factor in his decision to support him. He emphasized his commitment to supporting the president, indicating that Trump's backing carries significant weight within the party.
Similarly, Steube also confirmed his support for Johnson as he entered the floor, aligning himself with the growing number of Republicans backing the incumbent speaker.
While some members have yet to publicly declare their stance, Crane and Steube's announcements suggest a trend towards party unity in favor of Johnson's re-election as speaker.
In the upcoming vote, the candidate for speaker must secure a majority of all votes cast. With one vacancy expected in the House due to former GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz's decision not to assume his elected seat, there are 434 members in total, comprising 219 Republicans and 215 Democrats. Therefore, a minimum of 218 votes is required to win the speakership.
However, Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky has already declared his opposition to Johnson, indicating a potential challenge in securing unanimous party support for the incumbent speaker.
