Republican Representative Lauren Boebert, who initially hesitated to support Johnson but eventually voted for him, stated that Johnson could maintain his position if he handles things correctly.
Boebert expressed a preference for a scenario where only one member would need to threaten to remove Johnson from the speakership. The House recently approved a rules package that allows for a 9-member motion to vacate the speakership.
Boebert warned that if compromises are made that undermine the agenda, there could be a motion to vacate Johnson. However, she clarified that she does not currently have a plan for such a motion.
Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal cautioned that governing with such a narrow margin could be challenging for Johnson, as he may need to collaborate with Democrats to secure a majority.
Jayapal mentioned a previous bipartisan bill to fund the federal government that was abandoned in December after President-elect Donald Trump intervened, indicating a lack of trust in Johnson's ability to follow through on agreements.
Republican Representative Troy Nehls highlighted Trump's influence in helping Johnson become Speaker and in securing the House majority.
Nehls emphasized the debt of gratitude owed to Trump by Johnson and House Republicans for their current positions.
