House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer have accused the White House of releasing a false transcript of President Biden's remarks, where he allegedly referred to supporters of former President Donald Trump as 'garbage.' Stefanik and Comer sent a letter to White House counsel Edward Siskel demanding that records related to the remarks and the transcript be preserved.
In their letter, Stefanik and Comer highlighted the upcoming 2024 presidential election and the role of President Biden, who has chosen not to seek a second term. They criticized Biden for allegedly insulting a large portion of the country by calling them 'garbage' in an effort to boost Vice President Kamala Harris's presidential campaign.
The White House denied that Biden referred to Trump supporters as 'garbage' and released a transcript of his remarks, which stated that he was criticizing hateful rhetoric and demonization of Latinos. White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates clarified that Biden's comments were directed at the rhetoric at a Trump rally, not at Trump supporters.
Following the controversy, Vice President Harris sought to distance herself from the remarks while defending President Biden's clarification. She emphasized her commitment to representing all Americans, regardless of their political affiliations, and reiterated her belief in unity and inclusivity.
During a recent speech, Harris emphasized the importance of unity and breaking through divisiveness, stating that as President, she would strive to be a leader for all Americans, regardless of their voting preferences.
