The House Oversight Committee, led by Chairman James Comer, has issued a subpoena to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for records related to Democratic vice presidential nominee Gov. Tim Walz's alleged connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Comer's investigation, initiated last month, is seeking intelligence reports, documents, and communications from DHS regarding the purported longstanding ties between Walz and the CCP.
A whistleblower alerted the committee to a non-classified Microsoft Teams group chat among DHS employees, which reportedly contains information on Walz's alleged connections to the CCP.
The subpoena, directed to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, requests all relevant documents and communications from the Microsoft Teams group chat and intelligence reports from November 2023 to present.
Comer has raised concerns about Walz's engagements with Chinese entities, citing instances such as organizing student trips to China and his association with a Chinese institution.
The investigation also focuses on Walz's private company that coordinated student trips to China and his interactions with Chinese officials.
Comer emphasized the importance of understanding and countering CCP's influence campaigns targeting prominent Americans for 'elite capture.'
The committee is considering legislative reforms to address deficiencies in combating CCP political warfare and safeguarding national security.
The subpoena underscores the ongoing efforts to assess the extent of CCP infiltration and influence in the United States.
