Television network HBO has responded to widespread criticism that the latest episode of House of the Dragon was too dark - leaving some viewers describing it as completely 'unwatchable'.
The seventh instalment of the current series - which is a prequel to hit programme Game of Thrones - aired Sunday evening (October 2) in the US, with Sky Atlantic broadcasting the edition the following morning in the UK.
And The Mirror reports that although it brought drama in the form of its plot, the airing prompted frustration among hardcore viewers - who felt that 'poor lighting' made it difficult to consume.

HBO has since addressed critiques over the episode's lighting, in response to an abundance of viewers who took to Twitter to complain about the issue in recent days. One viewer, who prompted the response, said they would like a 'written apology for literally a whole episode of black screen,' with them adding that it was 'ridiculous'.
In a comment shared by support account @HBOMaxHelp, it was said that it had been an 'intentional' decision by those behind the show to use dim lighting in the episode. In their response, they wrote: "We appreciate you reaching out about a night scene in [episode seven] appearing dark on your screen. The dimmed lighting of this scene was an intentional creative decision."
Viewers, however, weren't impressed by the explanation, instead responding that it was a 'bad decision'. Some said they simply want the show to be watchable.
The Mirror approached WarnerMedia for comment.
House of the Dragon premiered in August and is set to conclude its first season later this month. It has been confirmed that the HBO show has been renewed for a second season.
The show – which is based on works by George R. R. Martin – is set centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, which was broadcast from 2011 until its finale in 2019. House of the Dragon continues on Sunday (October 9) in the US on HBO and HBO Max at 9pm EST. Episodes are on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK at 2am, repeated at 9pm.
