House Freedom Caucus member Chip Roy, a Republican from Texas, expressed his reservations about the GOP budget resolution on Wednesday. Roy stated that he had hoped for more significant spending cuts in the proposed budget but remained open to hearing from GOP leadership regarding their plans.
The House's budget plan, unveiled on Wednesday, aims for a minimum of $1.5 trillion in spending cuts, with a target of $2 trillion. Failure to reach the $2 trillion goal would necessitate lawmakers to cut $500 billion from their tax plans.
Roy indicated that he and others had initially sought a $2.5 trillion agreement within the conference. He acknowledged that the $2 trillion target might be challenging to achieve and highlighted the need to address various variables in the budget plan.
While Roy expressed disappointment that the proposed $1.5 trillion in spending cuts fell below his expectations, he emphasized that it serves as a starting point. He reiterated his willingness to listen to alternative strategies put forth by GOP leadership to reach the desired budget figures.
Regarding the uncertainty surrounding the attainment of the $2 trillion goal, Roy emphasized the importance of resolving outstanding issues and finding viable solutions. He underscored the need for clarity on additional measures that would be implemented to bridge the gap between the current proposal and the desired $2 trillion target.
As Roy prepared to meet with House Speaker Mike Johnson, he maintained a cautious stance, stating that there are still unresolved factors that require further deliberation. He emphasized the significance of exploring alternative approaches to meet the budgetary objectives set forth by the GOP.
