A recent report released by the top Democrat on the House Administration Committee aims to challenge Republican attempts to reshape the narrative surrounding the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. This report comes as a response to a Republican-led investigation led by Rep. Barry Loudermilk, which suggested that former Rep. Liz Cheney should face FBI prosecution for her role in investigating the attack.
The report, presented by Democratic Rep. Joseph Morelle, highlights the ongoing political tensions surrounding the events of January 6 and the subsequent investigations. Morelle accuses Loudermilk of prioritizing former President Donald Trump's interests over enhancing Capitol security to prevent future attacks.
One key aspect of the report is the refutation of allegations that Cheney colluded with former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson. Hutchinson's attorney, William H. Jordan, dismissed these claims in a letter made public by Morelle.
Morelle criticized the Republican-led investigation for failing to produce significant new findings related to Capitol security. He also raised concerns about the decision to release Capitol security footage on a third-party website, Rumble, with initial access granted to Tucker Carlson.
Former US Capitol Police Acting Director of Intelligence, Julie Farnam, expressed reservations about uploading security footage to Rumble during her testimony to Loudermilk's subcommittee in June 2024. The cost of this upload, exceeding $250,000 in taxpayer funds in the second quarter of 2024, was highlighted by Morelle based on committee disbursements.
