House belonging to legendary Rangers founder put on the market

A HOUSE belonging to a Glasgow Rangers legend has hit the market.

The stunning four-bedroom property once belonged to Moses McNeil, one of the founding members of the Light Blues.

He lifted the Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup in 1879 with the team and was also one of the first players to represent Scotland against Wales.

Now, 168 years after McNeil was born, the home he lived in is up for sale in a cosy corner of Clynder, Helensburgh.

It has been considerably upgraded since the Rangers hero lived there as it now features spacious bathrooms with an eight jet shower, and also uses solar panels for sustainable energy.

The historic home has an asking price of £260,000 and has a special blue plaque in memory of Moses outside.

The property "would make an ideal family home with great history or to the investor, who is a football fan!” according to Rightmove.

The property description reads: “Locals recall, ‘The Rangers man’', was always very dapper in his suit and bowler hat, he would travel to Glasgow once a month to collect his pension, from the club, then return later in the day with a spring in his step and a slur on his speech!

“Moses McNeil packed a bag in 1871, left Rosneath, and headed to industrial Glasgow seeking employment.

“What he actually did was help form a football club that was to become the world's most successful and would affect the lives of millions worldwide for generations to come.

“He spent the last few years of his life living in Clynder at Craig Cottage.”

Rightmove added: “[Moses] was a natural athlete, powerful and of stocky build, it was said that was known for his pace and he had stamina too.

“He won his first cup for a half-mile race at the Garelochead Athletic Sports on 1st January, 1876 which is the oldest trophy that sits in The Rangers Museum.

“A member of a Rangers side that lifted the Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup in 1879 and the first player to represent Scotland against Wales, then capped to play against England defeating them 5-4 at First Hampden Park in 1880.”

The beloved home enjoys fantastic size and offers a versatile living space for over the levels.

The accommodation includes a welcoming reception hall, over 18' dining lounge with Inglenook fireplace, and stunning feature bay window to the front.

The desirable hamlet of Clynder forms part of the Rosneath peninsula which is surrounded by picturesque scenery.

It is well placed for access to Garelochhead's railway station on the Highland line providing services to Glasgow, Oban and Mallaig which is reputed to be the most scenic train journey in the UK.
