Hour-by-hour North East weather forecast as sun set to make way for snow before Storm Eunice hits

The harsh winter weather shows no signs of letting up across the North East over the next 24 hours with snow on the way in some areas.

Leading meteorologists the Met Office have forecast sunny weather for the morning with this turning to rain and even the possibility of snow in the region during the evening.

This comes as yet another storm is forecast to hit the region in the coming days in the form of Storm Eunice which is likely to cause more disruption with heavy snow and winds on Friday, the Met Office have said.

They are expecting the following: "Snow, heavy in places, is likely to develop on the northern side of Storm Eunice as it moves across the UK on Friday.

"There is still uncertainty in the track of Storm Eunice and not all areas within the warning area are expected to see snow.

"However, some places may see around 5 cm of snow at low levels away from coasts.

"Accumulations are expected to be significantly higher over hills though with 10-20 cm perhaps up to 30 cm possible above around 250 metres. Strong winds occurring at the same time may lead to very poor visibility, blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow."

The Met Office has warned that people should expect travel disruptions with road, rail, air and services may be affected.

There is a slight chance that some rural communities could be temporarily cut off, they have said, alongside power cuts and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, being affected.

Ahead of this, the meteorologists expect conditions to be as follows today: "Isolated showers and clear spells initially, with a slight frost. Then becoming cloudy, with heavy rain spreading north-eastwards later, turning to heavy snow and accumulating even at low levels. Minimum temperature -1 °C."

Through the evening, the wintry chill is expected to continue with snow briefly on its way, the forecasters claim: "Widespread snow at first, often heavy, with accumulations. This quickly clears, then cloudy with spells of rain, the rain likely to increasingly turn to snow as strong winds develop. Maximum temperature 4 °C."
