Hotel owner hits back strongly after tourists 'leave immediately' after check in

A couple who claim they immediately left a hotel after arriving have come in for stern criticism from the owners.

In a scathing Tripadvisor review, one of the unhappy travellers claimed that staff at the Bonham Hotel in Edinburgh were rude and uncooperative.

She urged people to avoid the hotel "at all costs", having previously stayed there with her partner "many times over the years", Edinburgh Live reported.

“Terrible experience upon arrival with some member of staff at the front entrance - no name but not helpful or pleasant," the unhappy woman wrote.

"We had an immediate complaint and [the member of staff] was rude and uncooperative about it, resulting in a verbal confrontation."

The reviewer said they left right away and stayed at another hotel elsewhere in Edinburgh where they were "treated with respect and decency".

The general manager of the Bonham Hotel has hit back at the reviewer, saying neither she nor her partner will be welcome there in the future.

“As explained yesterday, we do not accept verbal abuse and swearing at our staff which is wholly unacceptable in any environment," the manager said. "I'm afraid this meant we were unable to accommodate you on this stay or any future visit.

“I am glad you were able to find alternative accommodation that better suited you for this trip and in the future.”

The Bonham Hotel has an average 4.5 star rating out of more than 2,000 reviews on Tripadvisor.

While reviewing platforms are great ways for the typically reserved British visitor to share compliments and issues with a hotel, they can also provide a battle ground for irate reviewers and owners.

It's not just businesses that can come under fire - destinations that disappoint can also be at the mercy of reviews. In fact, one tourist earlier this year was mocked after their scathing review of a Cornish village.

In a 131-word critique of Mevagissey, the visitor said that the historic location, of which the harbour alone dates back to 1774, should undergo a complete revamp to accommodate those who didn't quite like the layout.

They slammed the number of cars, lack of outdoor seating and the old harbour, arguing that the "whole place needs a redesign".

Famous for its two harbour walls, picturesque cottages and fishing boats bobbing up and down on the water inside the two inner harbours, it is no surprise that Mevagissey is usually swamped with tourists over the summer.

Cornwall councillor for the area, James Mustoe, found the review as bemusing as most locals.

He wrote: "Very disappointed indeed that they didn't design the 16th century fishing port to take into account the development of motor cars and the prevalence of tourism hundreds of years later."

Others shared in the humorous aspect of the remarks. One said: "During the redesign can they perhaps build the whole harbour about one metre higher to cope with those pesky spring tides?"
