Hotel guests restrain man after alleged 'unprovoked' knife attack

A man allegedly attacked a stranger in a hotel hallway, cut his chest with a knife and tried to drag him away, before bystanders helped restrain the man.

Jandamarra Elcery Liles Olle was denied bail in the ACT Magistrates Court last week.

Olle, 36, faces charges of choking, suffocating to strangling another person, assault with intent to commit another offence, unlawfully confining a person, and possessing an offensive weapon with intent. He is yet to enter pleas.

Court documents state that in May, about 9pm, a guest was walking down a hallway in a Civic hotel when a stranger appeared and launched an "unprovoked attack".

The stranger, later identified as Olle, is said to have used his hands to grab the other man's neck and tried to drag him away, while yelling "get in the room".

When the alleged victim resisted, Olle pulled a 20 centimetre folding knife from his pocket and moved it towards the other man's chest causing a small cut.

Hearing cries for help, another man and a woman ran over to assist the alleged victim. Together, the three people were able to get the knife out of Olle's hand and hold him down while the police were called.

When officers arrived, the alleged victim and the other man were still restraining the attacker.

On Thursday, Legal Aid lawyer Richard Brandon-Baker argued Olle was diagnosed with schizophrenia and wasn't taking his medication at the time of the alleged attack.

Prosecutor Corinne Kennedy told the court Olle had self reported swallowing a bolt, and chopped off part of his hand with an axe.

She said he was in the acute care unit in Canberra's jail and opposed him being granted bail.

Olle was remanded in custody and is set to face court again in November.
