Sitting happily lonesome on its very own stretch of beach means enforced relaxation takes precedence at Hotel Escondido.
Serenity and laid-back luxury are the order of the day here. Shaded cabanas dot the beach and nearby artist’s retreat Casa Wabi gives guided tours of its unique and architecturally impressive site, adding a touch of culture to the neighbourhood.
Where is it?
Hotel Escondido sits on a secluded stretch of pristine golden coastline 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of surfing Mecca Puerto Escondido on Mexico’s southern coast. A short 30 minute sunrise flight, direct from Mexico’s Oaxaca City, in a once in a lifetime propeller plane lands you in a tropical paradise.
Style
Pared back luxury. The 16 private cabanas give guests complete privacy should they want it. Bare floorboards and local palapa thatched roofs are met with modern touches of polished concrete bathrooms and stucco walls. Each cabana comes equipped with an outdoor deck, private plunge pool and hammock for whiling away the day. The communal areas share dark wooden walkways surrounded by channels of water giving a sense of calm throughout.
Facilities
The 50-metre pool nestled by the beach provides guests with an excellent vantage point to watch the sunset. Guests can also take advantage of the onsite spa and enjoy a massage on the beach to the sound of waves.
Food and Drink
Breakfast is impressive with endless coffee and fresh juices to get you started alongside pastries, fresh fruit and hot Mexican classics. The chilaquiles with red and green salsa is a great start to any day. Guests can order light snacks of tacos and salads either by the pool or to their private cabanas throughout the day. The dinner menu focuses on locally and responsibly sourced ingredients, with the catch of the day being consistently delicious. The hotel also has a no bottled water policy, instead filtering all water onsite and delivering fresh jugs to your cabana or lounger on request.
Which room?
Every cabana is steps away from the beach and comes with private decking and a small plunge pool. Inside there is a king sized bed, high palm thatched ceilings, rainforest shower, built in wardrobes and a separate bathroom. Rooms 1 and 16 feel the most remote, with only one neighbouring cabana.
Best for?
This adults-only hotel is best for couples wanting to get off the beaten path and relax. Time really does slow down at Hotel Escondido. The hotel and its beautiful surroundings give a real sense of isolation, calm and recuperation.
