Hot October half-term holiday destinations for autumn sun seekers

With summer over here in the UK, some of us aren't ready to say goodbye to the high temperatures. But despite things cooling off here, with the nights drawing in and the changing of the clocks looming, there are plenty of holiday destinations you can fly to direct from Bristol Airport as we head into winter.

The October half-term is a fabulous time for families to get away without paying August prices. Those who aren't stuck to school holidays could well pick up a bargain as well by searching for soon-after dates.

Thankfully, in most places the October weather doesn't send us running inside in search of air-con, with a more comfortable heat instead that's perfect for relaxing. Here are five destinations - a mix of short and long-haul - if you're keen to continue soaking up the sun's rays to see out 2022.

1. Cancun, Mexico

Starting with a luxury, long-haul break, Cancun records some of the hottest October temperatures, with the city on Mexico's eastern coast recording average temperatures of 32C. October falls at the end of the country's wet season, so rainfall is reduced to around 140mm but before the beginning of the dry season, when prices peak.

While known as somewhat of a party destination for those living the high life, there are also some fantastic archaeological sites, including the Mayan El Rey ruins, Caribbean beaches and spectacular restaurants. Flights, direct from London, can take around 10 and a half hours.

With Hurricane Orlene making landfall in southwest Mexico recently, make sure that you check all travel guidance and advice before booking a trip. Mexico's hurricane season ends in November, so if you do choose this for your half-term break, don't be shocked if there's heavy rain and strong winds.

Tui offers direct flights between Bristol and Cancún. Fares can cost around £400.

2. Marrakesh, Morocco

A city rich in history and culture with gorgeous palaces and gardens. Temperatures here reach highs of 28C this month and skies are often bright and clear.

While there, come away with an experience to remember by visiting one of Marrakesh's iconic souks (markets). Souk Semmarine is the biggest of them all. Rugs, leather goods, silverware and crockery of all shapes and sizes are on offer in this labyrinth – just try not to get lost.

Direct flights are available from Bristol Airport with Tui for around £200 return. Hotels can cost on average of £50-£60 per night and there are options to suit all tastes and needs.

3. Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Ideal for school holidays with the family, Lanzarote has so much to offer, and not just the 26C sunshine. Many travel providers offer great deals on flights and hotels, with many all-inclusive options available.

If you and the family fancy getting out and about on your trip, visit the stunning Timanfaya National Park. It was created by volcanic eruptions in the 1700s and you get incredible views of the moonscape from a coach tour or by electric Twizy cars.

For water-lovers among you, Rancho Texas Park, found roughly 10 minutes from Lanzarote Airport, is one of the country's most popular destinations. The park combines a waterpark with animals and amazing live shows and for older kids and adults, there's even an opportunity to interact with dolphins and sea lions.

4. Kos, Greece

A tremendously popular and very beautiful Greek island, Kos is a popular tourist destination, renowned for its beautiful beaches. Average temperatures reach around 26C with average rainfall at 55 mm, however, this is still a largely dry month.

The island is home to the father of medicine, Hippocrates, and for those who don't fancy lounging around the pool, take a trip to Asklepieion. Named after the Greek god of healing, this legendary medical centre dates back to the 3rd century BC.

5. Rome, Italy

While not as scorching hot as some other locations, Rome is the perfect getaway for those who like a busy city break. You can still expect to soak up 22C while roaming the city's cobbled streets.

Kids will love hearing about the gladiator fights of the Colosseum, exploring the ruins of the Roman Forum or revelling in the sights of St Peter's Square. The food is on another level and you'll return home with tired feet, but full bellies for sure.
