Hot August night breaks records around southern, central Queensland

Brisbane and a handful of other Queensland cities have experienced their hottest August night on record.

Temperatures in Brisbane did not drop below 19.4 degrees Celsius overnight. The last record set was 19.2C in 2009.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster James Thompson said a combination of factors led to the hotter night.

"We had a warm, moist airflow ahead of a trough moving across the country, and that combined with a decent cloud kept the temperatures up overnight," Mr Thompson said.

Gladstone, Kingaroy, Logan, 1770, and Gayndah also broke records.

Gympie tied its record.

"Anywhere close enough to that trough to be getting that nice warm, moist airflow in, but close enough to have that cloud cover as well," he said.

He said the system will move off the coast this afternoon and evening.

Temperatures are forecast to drop to 13C tonight in Brisbane.

"Which is still about 3 degrees above our average of 9.7 in Brisbane, but then Friday and Saturday down to 9 degrees overnight," Mr Thompson said.
