A host of special celebrations are being organised in North Lanarkshire to help mark the historic occasion of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Communities will be celebrating the Jubilee with local activities over the bank holiday weekend from June 2 to 5.
The Lanarkshire Beacons will be lit a musical performance by local schools, and a weekend of fun-filled activities and celebration at Summerlee Museum.
A new avenue of trees will be created at three country parks in North Lanarkshire as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy and children and young people will have fun learning about the Jubilee as part of the curriculum as well as sports and physical activity challenges and team building games.
Des Murray, chief executive of North Lanarkshire Council, told us : “The extended Bank Holiday weekend will provide an opportunity for communities to come together to mark this milestone in royal history.
“A range of community groups have benefitted from the Platinum Jubilee Community Grants, to help fund events such as street parties, tea dances, lunches or to spruce up local areas, in celebration.
“We’re also delighted to host the Beacon Lighting event with South Lanarkshire Council as part of a programme of local and national events to celebrate this unique anniversary.”
The celebrations begin with the lighting of two official beacons in Strathclyde Country Park on Thursday, June 2, by the Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Susan Haughey.
North Lanarkshire Schools Pipe Band will play ‘Diu Regnare’ and South Lanarkshire Schools’ Chorus will sing ‘A Song for the Commonwealth’.
From Thursday to Saturday, there will be a celebration of the seven decades at Summerlee Museum of Industrial Life, including a vintage car show, dancing displays from local community groups, music from a range of local bands, a fashion show, animals/petting zoo and food and drink from local producers.
On Sunday, June 5, the Coatbridge museum will then host an official street party offering food,drink and entertainment for the whole family.
The new Queen’s Green Canopy will see the creation of three avenues of trees at Drumpellier Country Park in Coatbridge, Palacerigg Country Park in Cumbernauld and Duchess of Hamilton Park in Motherwell with work to create these wooded areas already underway.
Lady Susan Haughey, Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire said: “With Her Majesty celebrating a magnificent 70 years of public service, this Platinum Jubilee offers a wonderful opportunity for local communities in North Lanarkshire to celebrate this truly historic occasion.
“This unique anniversary will provide the chance to celebrate a joyful occasion after what has been a very difficult last couple of years during the health pandemic.
“I would encourage as many people as possible to get involved at this moment of national celebration.”
