Hospital cases rise as South Australia reports another two COVID-linked deaths

There are currently 252 COVID-19 cases in hospital in SA. (ABC News: Eugene Boisvert)

South Australia has recorded another two COVID-linked deaths and 4,256 new cases.

The number of people in hospital has increased to 252 and includes 14 people in intensive care and two on ventilation.

Those who died with the illness are two men — one of whom was aged in his 60s and the other in his 80s.

However, the overall number of people currently considered infectious with the virus continues to decline.

There are now 28,573 active cases of the virus — about 500 fewer than yesterday.

The 4,256 comes on top of the 3,829 reported yesterday, taking the total number of new cases reported in the past two days to 8,085.

But, due to what SA Health described as a "reconfiguration of the data", the total of 364,513 is 9,793 — not 8,085 — more than what it was two days ago.

In recent months, the growth in the total number of cases from day to day has regularly exceeded the reported number of new cases, sometimes by several hundred.

A total of 12,013 people received PCR tests yesterday, while boosters have so far been administered to just over 71 per cent of the eligible population.

Vaccine mandates still required, Stevens says

SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said it remained appropriate to have vaccine mandates "in certain sectors".

"With the South Australia Police, we no longer have a mandate under the Emergency Management Act," Mr Stevens told radio station 5AA this morning.

"But there's been a managerial direction that's been put in place that requires police employees to be up-to-date with their vaccinations, and if they're not up-to-date with their vaccinations, then they have to wear masks in certain settings and have a RAT on alternate days.

"Nothing is forever, we are continually reviewing the requirements for these and we can manage or modify these requirements as circumstances change.

"But I think at this point in time we'll continue with some of these mandates."

Mr Stevens foreshadowed a possible repeal of isolation requirements for household contacts, saying there was discussion at yesterday's Emergency Management Council meeting.

"There was a reference to the fact that the eastern states are looking to make these changes," he said.

"It's on the agenda for us, ideally, and I think the Premier has made this point quite clearly that he's keen for national consistency wherever possible."
