Two hospice workers were left stunned when a good-hearted stranger paid for their fuel while they were on shift. Part of St Michael’s Hospice Home Team in Hereford, senior healthcare assistants Jaki Moffat and Katie Hughes were midway through a shift when they stopped to fill up one of the Hospice’s branded cars at a petrol station.
As Jaki made her way into the store to pay, a man leant out of his car window to say he’d already settled the £28 bill. He left no name or wanted any thanks and drove off. After St Michael's Hospice posted about the kind gesture and the mystery man to its 26,000 social media followers, the good Samaritan has now been identified as Mike Perruzza.
Jaki and Katie were able to meet him this week to say thank you in person. "Something like this really restores your faith in humanity and we can’t thank Mike enough for his generosity", said Jaki.
Generous Mike said it was a pleasure to help support St Michael’s Hospice. "I’ve been to St Michael’s several times as part of my voluntary role with Herefordshire 4×4 Response, helping Hospice staff get to work during floods and heavy snow," he said.
"Through my working career, I’ve seen colleagues who have had friends and family cared for by St Michael’s. It’s just a great cause".
Facebook followers of St Michael’s Hospice have been bowled over by Mike’s kind act. "Lovely post and what a kind gesture by that super chap," one person wrote.
"What a lovely thing to do for people who care and look after our community," another said, in a view shared by many.
"Thank you to this very kind gentleman. These nurses do a wonderful job to help families who need their help in caring for the very sick", one commenter added.
