A section of the M6 was blocked in both directions after collision involving a horse box.
The emergency services were called out to a section of the motorway between junction 18 for Holmes Chapel and junction 19 for Knutsford at around 10.20 am today ( Sunday.)
A vet was called to the scene to sedate a horse so firefighters could get it out of its horse box.
There were no reports of any injuries, police said.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
A spokesperson from Cheshire Constabulary said: "Officers were called just before 10.20am on Sunday 18 April to M6 southbound between junction 18 and junction 19 following reports of a collision involving a HGV and a horse box.
"There were no injuries.
"A vet is currently on scene to sedate the horse so that firefighters can extract it from the horsebox.
"Drivers are urged to avoid the area and to stay in their vehicles if they are behind the incident.
"Road closures are in place on both the northbound and southbound carriageway."
A spokesperson from Highways England said: "The M6 is closed in both directions between J19 and J18 due to a road traffic collision involving a lorry and a horse box.
"Cheshire Police are in attendance.
"There are currently delays of 25 minutes and 4 miles of congestion southbound.
"Road users are advised to expect delays on the approach to the incident and allow extra time for their journeys."

A statement from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We're currently at a collision on M6 between junction 19 and junction 18 southbound.
"Both northbound and southbound carriageways are closed. If you are waiting, please do so in your vehicles.
"Thank you all for your patience."
A spokesperson from North West Motorway Police said: "Emergency services are attending an RTC on the M6 SB between J19 & J18. There is a lane 1 closure set between these junction to allow emergency services to get to scene.
"Highways England will be closing J19 whilst this incident is managed."
