Horse dies after being hit by car on Coast Road at Wallsend as person trapped in vehicle

A horse has been killed after it was hit by a car while running loose on the Coast Road near Wallsend.

At around 6.45am on Friday, police received reports that two horses were loose and running toward oncoming traffic on the Coast Road, at the Battle Hill sliproad on the westbound carriageway.

Both animals were hit by vehicle. One has sadly died while another is receiving veterinary treatment.

The bizarre early-morning incident saw one person become trapped inside their vehicle, luckily escaping with only minor injuries.

After the collision the road was closed westbound but one lane has since reopened.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 6.45am, police received a report of two horses loose on the westbound carriageway of the Coast Road near the Battle Hill slip road in North Tyneside.

“It was reported both horses had come in collision with vehicles, with one driver becoming trapped in a vehicle with reported minor injuries.

“Emergency services attended the scene, however one horse had already sadly died of injuries sustained during the collision. The second horse is receiving veterinary treatment.

“The road is currently closed to allow for the animals and vehicles to be moved. Police and partners are on scene assisting with traffic diversion.

“Road users are advised to avoid the area where possible and find alternative routes as traffic is currently at a standstill to Billy Mill in North Tyneside."

It is not known where the horses came from or how they made it onto the road.
