Horse dies after collapsing on busy Smithfield road

A horse died after collapsing on a busy Smithfield road yesterday evening.

My Lovely Horse Rescue co-founder Martina Kenny said that the horse, who collapsed on the busy street, was in good condition prior to the incident.Gardai rushed to the scene in order to provide the animal with medical assistance.

Sadly, the horse had to be put down by a vet. The cause of the collapse has not yet been established.

Martina told Dublin Live: "The owner of the horse was a good guy and the animal had been well cared for. Going forward we need a license plate on each carriage that we know has been approved by a vet and Dublin City Council."

The charity is already concerned about a spike in horse and carriage operations over the summer. Martina said that decent carriage drivers are tarred with the same brush as those who do not properly care for their horses.

She said: "Summer’s coming and the streets will be full of kids with badly run carriages. Both animals and people's businesses will suffer this summer at the hands of people making quick money."

A license plate on each carriage would help distinguish good carriage owners from bad, Martina said. Dublin Live has contacted Gardai for comment.
