Horror moment small plane crashes into sea killing pilot and two-year-old child

Images showed a small plane crashing into the sea off the coast of Mexico killing the pilot and a two-year-old child who is believed to have been his son.

Four other passengers were rushed to hospital with their condition unknown after the tragedy on April 8.

A tourist on a catamaran filmed how the light aircraft passed overhead in the city of Mazatlan, on Mexico's Pacific coast and as it descended close to the shore, it was clear that it did not have enough altitude or speed to land on dry land.

It hit the sea with a large splash and came to rest with its tail in the air and the remainder of its fuselage underwater.

A second piece of footage shows rescue workers pulling a young boy from the water.

The director of the Sinaloa State Civil Protection Institute, Aurelio Roy Navarrete Cuevas, told local media that four people were taken to a private clinic.

They were named as 47-year-old Denisse Lorena and minors Sergio, Maria Angela, and Deniss Alejandra, with their surnames not divulged.

Navarrete Cuevas added that the authorities pulled the body of a two-year-old, believed to be the pilot's son, from the water.

The pilot and the toddler are both thought to have been trapped inside the plane after it crashed.

Local media said the aircraft involved was a Cessna 210 Centurion that had taken off from the nearby locality of El Roble.

Officials preliminarily believe that the plane suffered a mid-flight malfunction that led the pilot to attempt the descent.

The authorities have opened an investigation into the crash.

The Volunteer Fire Department of Mazatlan wrote online shortly after the accident: "An airplane fell in the navigation canal and is being attended to by the Mazatlan Fire Department in collaboration with the Navy, Aquatic Police, Mazatlan Municipal System of Civil Protection, and Civil Protection of the Government of Sinaloa.

"The injured were transported to the hospital, and divers are searching the bottom of the navigation canal as it is presumed that there may still be people inside."

It is the latest plane tragedy to hit Mexico recently with three small planes having crashed in the country in just March.
