Horror moment avoided at PGA Championship as golfer struck on head by wayward tee shot

PGA Tour star Aaron Wise was smashed on the head at the PGA Championship by Cameron Smith's wayward tee shot. Wise was on the seventh hole during Friday’s second round, concentrating on his shot from the fairway into the green.

The American’s pre-shot routine took a wild turn, due to the actions of Smith five holes back. The Australian star hit a wild tee shot from the second hole, which flew over to the seventh and struck the unaware Wise on the head without bouncing.

After being hit, the American dropped to one knee for around 30 seconds before brushing off the blow and carrying on with his round.

Fortunately, Wise was able to finish off his round and only had three holes left to play after beginning his second round on the 10th hole. In spite of the knock on the head, the world No. 91 didn’t seem phased as he went on to score a par on the seventh hole at Southern Hills.

The American has put in a solid performance across the opening 36 holes, as he sits in a tie for 30th at one-over-par heading into the final two rounds. Following his outing on Friday, Wise was reportedly keen to show off his war wound to his fellow players.

Golf Channel reporter Ryan Lavner reported that the 25-year-old had ice on the back of his head-post round, whilst showing off the mark from where the ball hit him on his cap. Smith meanwhile made his way over to his wayward tee shot, before scrambling his way to make a hard-earned par.

The Australian star finds himself well in the mix heading into moving day at Southern Hills, after following up his two-under-par 68 on Thursday, with a solid level-par 70 in Friday’s second round. Those scores leave the Players champion two-under for the event, seven shots off leader Will Zalatoris in a tie for tenth.

Both Wise and Smith will continue their major outing in Oklahoma this evening, with the former teeing off alongside Scot Robert MacIntyre at 5:13pm BST, while the latter joins Cameron Young on the tee for the third round at 6:43pm BST.
