Horror images show burnt out shell of car after couple escape blazing motor

A couple made a lucky escape before their car was engulfed in flames at the side of a Scots road, leaving nothing but a melted shell behind. Emergency services rushed to Marykirk, Aberdeenshire, at around 2.12 pm on Sunday, 15 January, following reports that a BMW had caught fire.

One fire appliance was mobilised to the scene as firefighters battled to extinguish the blaze. There are not believed to be any injuries.

Images from the scene show the white BMW engulfed in flames just before the village's bridge. Later pictures show the burnt-out shell of the car, with the engine melted away.

The occupants of the car took to social media in the aftermath to thank kind locals who stopped to help. They said: " Can I please thank the young man and family who stopped to help us when my partner’s car went on fire at Marykirk this afternoon.

"The emergency services with the police and fire brigade were very prompt and professional in dealing with the car fire. Many thanks to all who helped."
