A man’s jaw was impaled by a 4ft--long iron rod after he fell while working on the balcony of his house on Sunday evening.
The man, who was identified just as Ranjit, 30, from Bhopal in India, fell from a height of around eight feet before landing on the rod.
It penetrated his neck, cut off his tongue and came out the other side of his jaw.
Shocking images show the top of the rod coming out of his open mouth, with blood splattered across his chest and face.
An X-ray scan image shows how the rod punctured his jaw.
After the incident, Ranjit was rushed to Niramay Hospital, where doctors surgically removed the rod over the course of two hours.
Doctors said that the patient was lucky that the iron rod did not enter the alimentary canal or windpipe, otherwise his life could have been in danger.
Had family members tried to remove the rod themselves, doctors say he would likely have died due to blood loss.
Ranjit is now “completely out of danger” – though it is not clear if he will require further surgeries.
Just last month The Mirror reported on an Irish tourist who was rushed to hospital after plunging from a hotel in the Spanish Island Majorca.
The 20-year-old was taken to Son Espases Hospital after falling from the third floor of the four-star TRH Jardin del Mar Beach Hotel, in the party resort of Santa Ponsa.
Emergency responders found the injured tourist at the back of the hotel in a gap between the hotel building and a small wall, having sustained “serious” head injuries.
One local report said he had told emergency responders he fell while being chased, sparking unconfirmed speculation he may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time.
The Civil Guard is investigating.
