Horrifying moment plane window CRACKS in middle of flight as passengers scream in panic

A passenger on a flight to New York has shown footage of the terrifying moment when a window on the plane cracked.

TikTok user Tristan was on a Poland Airlines flight to the United States from the Polish capital Warsaw when the alarming scenes took place on August 20.

The plane was making its descent into John F Kennedy Airport when the window suddenly began to crack.

The three passengers in the row next to the window quickly move from their seats as panic sets in and a woman is heard screaming out for the flight crew to come.

A safety message is then given out to the passengers on the plane by one of the crew to keep calm.

The Polish Airlines Boeing 787-8 which was north east of New York went on to descend to 10,000 feet, which it achieved 15 minutes later, and continued to New York for a safe landing, reported The Aviation Herald.

The airline has since said that the tightness of the window was not damaged and it was the electrophotochromatic layer used to darken the glass which was affected.

While this does happen occasionally, it is infrequent. Pilots will descend to reduce the pressure and plan on a diversion if necessary.

It did not stop the plane returning to Warsaw five hours later and with the window set to be replaced when back in Poland.

According to FAA regulations, a window has to be able to withstand a pressure at least 33% greater than the pressure outside. That means the window can withstand at least another 378 lbs of force.

Earlier this month a Polish Airlines 787-8 plane had to divert back to Warsaw when a crack was found on a windshield.

The plane was heading to Toronto, on August 14, when the crack was discovered close to Stavanger, Norway, and the captain decided to return to Warsaw.

To avoid further damage to the windshield or a loss of cabin pressure the plane was lowered to 10,000 feet, taking 40 minutes and the plane safely returned to Poland.
