An Aldi shopper has spoken of her shock after she claims she found what appeared to be a 'dead snake' in a tin of baked beans.
The 26-year-old from Porth in the county district of Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales, says she purchased the tin of Corale premium quality baked beans when she 'almost jumped back' after opening the lid.
Peering at the mysterious contents inside, she described seeing "something grey and black with distinctive markings" floating in the sauce.
Sharing her confusion with a photo on Twitter, she wrote: "So, um... is that a snake in my beans?"
Her tweet has since been viewed more than a million times, as many shared their revulsion at the 'unexpected item in the beaning area'.
One user described the find as "traumatising," while another replied: "Are you sure it’s not listed in the ingredients under 'addertives'?"
Another wrote simply: "Never eating beans again."
The customer, who has asked not to be named, said she was too worried by the discovery to actually find out what the item was for herself - and instead took it back to the shop at the earliest opportunity. She says they gave her two free bottles of wine in return as an apology.
She told Wales Online: "I physically couldn't bring myself to touch it. So I poked it with a fork and it all moved at once, after which point I refused to look again.
"So I wrapped it up and took it to Aldi to complain and they gave me two bottles of wine as a goodwill gesture."
After issuing her an apology, an Aldi spokesperson explained that the strange-looking object may have been perishing food caused by a breach in the packaging.
They said: "Whilst we would not be able to explain the exact cause of this, it may have been due to a breach in the packaging which has allowed air to enter and cause the item to perish.
"We will ensure your comments regarding this product are passed onto the relevant department. In the meantime, please return to the store for a full refund - please ask to speak to a member of staff who will be more than willing to help."
An Aldi spokesperson told the Mirror: “Although very rare, incidents like this can occasionally occur if packaging is damaged at any point before the product is consumed, as the contents may be exposed to air. We have apologised to the customer and have asked her to return the product packaging to store for a full refund.”
