Horrified crowd boos DJ over Ed Sheeran song choice for prom queen in wheelchair

A DJ has been shamed on TikTok for a poor choice of song played for a prom queen in a wheelchair.

As Sarah Mendenhal and her prom king start to dance Ed Sheeran's hit song 'Thinking Out Loud' begins

But the hit single's opening lyrics are "when your legs don't work like they used to before".

They were met by groans from the assembled attendees at the high school event in Texas, US.

The clip was taken in 2017 but only uploaded by user Celeste Orozco on Thursday and has already clocked up 17 million views, 3 million likes and 48,000 comments.

It carries the captions: "This would haunt me for the rest of my life if I was the DJ."

TikTokers were quick to criticise the DJ for his insensitive choice of song.

A fellow DJ said: "I'm a wedding dj.. ouch. We can’t know every lyric to every song but damn."

Someone else wrote: “My daughter is in a wheelchair and this is one of hers favs. She said she would have laughed if it had happened to her. Got to have a sense of humour."

“I would have been so embarrassed and just cried and left. I’m hoping this didn’t ruin her night,” another wrote.

But Ms Mendenhall wrote beneath the video to clear the air.

She said: "Hey everyone so this is me lol... I found it really funny and ironic. I didn’t know what was playing until way after cause I was tryna dance @Celeste.”

Ms Orozco then replied: “Had a great prom night and a good laugh about it the next day @sarahmendenhall4.”
