Horrific image shows driver's brutal injuries after brick launched at 70mph train

This shocking image shows the brutal injuries suffered by a train driver whose cab window was shattered after vandals launched a brick in Salford.

Ian Birch says he 'could have been killed' after his train was targeted as it travelled through Clifton at 70mph. He was left with cuts to the face but thankfully, he was able to bring the train to a halt safely.

Northern employee Mr Birch was helped by a doctor who was able to administer immediate first aid after the incident took place on Friday, February 4. Today (April 1), Northern has released the image as it continues to appeal for information while police continue their investigation.

Mr Birch said: “I want the people who did this to see the impact of their actions. I could have been blinded or even killed.

“Someone knows who threw that brick and I urge them to come forward to help ensure the person responsible doesn’t have the chance to endanger more lives with their reckless behaviour.” Mr Birch was taken to hospital following the incident and after recovering at home, he is now back at work.

The driver, who is based at Blackburn, has praised the response of the doctor on board for their help. Despite appeals for information from Northern and British Transport Police, no arrests have yet been made.

Anyone with information can contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
