Hope that man in CCTV image can shed light on CBD death

Sydney police investigating a suspicious death are seeking the whereabouts of an unidentified man. (HANDOUT/NSW POLICE)

Grainy footage of a man caught on CCTV leaving a Sydney city apartment could hold the clue to solving a suspicious death.

Police said they received a call for help from inside the York Street apartment just before 6pm on Friday.

The body of a 43-year-old man was found inside.

Detectives spoke to a 37-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man, also at the scene.

They were questioned before being released without charge.

But police say a man captured on the building's cameras on the morning before the discovery might be able to help with their inquiries.

He was seen inside the complex at 8am and drove away in a white ute.

Detective acting Inspector Hugh Michaelson said officers were trying to determine what, if any, connection the man had to the death.

"We believe he may have attended the unit; we are appealing to the members of the public to come forward to help identify this male," he said.

The man is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged in his 40s and with a clean-shaven face.

He was wearing a black hat, sunglasses, a black shirt with a blue triangle print on the front, a dark-coloured jacket, dark jeans and khaki boots.

Drug paraphernalia and some handwritten notes were found inside the unit and police said the material would form part of their investigation.

The woman is believed to have been an intimate partner of the man who died.

Police could not confirm the cause of death but said the incident was being treated as suspicious.
