Honours for Airdrie firm at World Scotch Pie Championships

Airdrie bakery Christie’s took two awards at the prestigious Scotch pie world championship for 2022.

The firm was named as second runner-up in the main Scotch pie category, and also claimed bronze in the steak pie category.

It followed a judging day in November and a mystery shopper test, with the results being announced this week at an awards ceremony hosted by television presenter Carole Smillie at the Westerwood Hotel in Cumbernauld.

Competition organisers Scottish Bakers called the local firm’s results at the 22nd annual awards “a great achievement”.

More than 70 butchers and bakers submitted a total of 400 different pies and delicacies to the judging event, with prizes on offer in 11 categories, ranging from sausage rolls and football pies to haggis savouries and apple pies.

A panel of experts, led by head judge Ian Nelson, carefully assessed each entry for its “appearance, consistency and taste”.

Scottish Bakers chief executive Alasdair Smith said: “It’s with great pleasure we can announce that Christie the Baker has taken a prize, and they can be rightly very proud.

“We took delivery of over 400 entries this year so to win is no small feat – and to know that every winning product was lovingly made from scratch from locally-sourced ingredients, freshly made daily by skilled craftspeople, just goes to show the skill, creativity and hard work of every entrant.”

He added: “We have overcome everything COVID could throw at us this year to celebrate the best pies, and as always the results do not disappoint.”
