Honeymoon father dies from cancer following shock diagnosis

A father who complained of a "sore side" while on a dream honeymoon trip to Las Vegas and Mexico has died just two months after he was given a shock cancer diagnosis. Alan Fraser, from Glasgow, died on October 3, aged just 39.

The Daily Record reports that he had returned home from the holiday of a lifetime with wife Myra in July after the pair tied the knot in 2021 but had their honeymoon postponed due to Covid. Alan complained of having a sore side while relaxing in the pool in the USA. The pair thought it might have been a hernia - but never dreamed the dad-of-two was suffering from a cancerous tumour in his stomach.

Devastated Myra, 33, a carer, said: “It doesn’t seem real, it feels like he could just walk in the door. We came back from our honeymoon in July, and a week later he went to hospital with pain in his stomach. He never left hospital again.

"It was two months between diagnosis and him passing away. He had complained of a sore stomach and pain in his side on holiday. Then when we came back he was sick for four days in a row, and I said, ‘You’re going to hospital’.

“I knew something wasn’t right. He went to hospital and a scan found a mass in his abdomen. Doctors thought it was lymphoma to start with, that it was treatable with chemotherapy. But then they did a biopsy and found it was far more serious. He was rushed in for two major surgeries.

“He was in intensive care, fighting for his life. He pulled through that – the doctor didn’t even think he was going to make it off the operating table."

Alan, who worked as a joiner, was in an induced coma for five days after the operation. From there, he was treated in the intensive care unit at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital before he passed away.

"We had a massive turnout for his funeral at the Linn Crematorium", Myra said. "They said that was the biggest funeral they’ve ever done, the biggest turnout they’ve ever seen. It was huge."

The couple had been together almost nine years, and have a daughter, Darcie, who is seven. Alan also has a son called Corey, who is 15. Alan is survived by Myra, his children and three sisters. Myra said: "Alan was like the glue of the family. They just lost their mum Karen a year ago to pancreatic cancer. She was only 53, so young as well."

Friends have set up a JustGiving page to benefit Alan's children. In just over two weeks, more than £5,000 has been raised. Details can be viewed on the JustGiving website.
