'Honest mum' leaves parents howling after children discover 'family sick bowl' has another use

A mum has said she needs to ‘break the cycle’ after her children discovered the ‘family sick bowl’ has another use.

Posting on her Facebook page, ‘The Unmumsy Mum’, divided opinion with her candid revelation with some calling it ‘beyond disgusting’ while others agreed it was also their ‘family tradition’. The author - whose real name is Sarah Turner - has written several books about ‘honest parenting’.

She told followers her kids have “just discovered that the family sick bowl and the cake mix bowl are one and the same”. She added: “In my defence, this was also the case when I was growing up … but now I’ve said it out loud, I realise I need to break the cycle. I won’t be taking any further questions.”

She later added: “I thought it was in pretty good condition (I do effectively boil wash it) but I’ve just had a closer look and I’m not sure whether the slight orange staining is from carrot cake or the norovirus”.

While some people reacted with horror, there were plenty of people who said they could relate to The Unmumsy Mum’s post. Sue Penton said: “This has made me laugh out loud - it really is a family tradition passed down from generation to generation. It’s just the right size for both”.

Claire Cooper added: “We had a bowl that was the washing up bowl, sick bowl, defrost the turkey at Christmas bowl, putting eucalyptus oil and boiling water in for clearing your blocked nose bowl and (if we were feeling flush) the apple bobbing bowl! The 80s was all about multifunctional plastic bowls”.

Claire Sloman said: “Ha same!! I always worry I haven’t washed it thoroughly”. While Karen Olley added: “I always said I wasn’t going to do this, then I was making a cake and realised I had no other bowls”.

Meanwhile, follower Charlie Benn said: “We use empty Celebrations tins - the plastic ones. My Goddaughter was in Sainsbury’s recently where there were 1000s of Celebrations boxes ready for Christmas. She shouted at the top of her voice, ‘look at all the sick bowls!’”

And David Browne added: “Always loved your down to earth posts, but this one is the best! Thank you so much for keeping parenting real! Making us normal people feel normal”.

But not everyone was convinced. Nicola Erica Leachman said: “Ours is a bucket. I thought that was everyone’s sick ‘bowl’. This has made me reevaluate eating others home made cakes now.”

And Raychelle Antoinette Newman said: “What in the he!!?! This is beyond disgusting. There are toilets and trash cans for that. I hope you’ve never made a cake for anyone outside of your home in that bowl”.
